Robert was the son of Ranulf, son of Alice — and her husband, Robert Grosvenor, to whom Hugh II (Kevelioc), earl of Chester, granted the vill of Budworth between 1162 and 1173.[1]
Ranulph III, earl of Chester and Lincoln, sent a writ to the justiciar of Chester to take action in a plea of mort d'ancestor between Robert son of Ranulf le Grosvenor and Robert son of Robert le Grosvenor concerning land in Budworth, and because Robert, the son of Ranulf, complained that Alice, formerly the wife of his said grandfather, unjustly had a dowry there, to summon Alice, wife of William of Stretton, formerly wife of Robert Grosvenor, grandfather of Robert son of Ranulf, to answer about her dowry. Professor Barraclough dated this deed to between 1217 and 1224.[1]
Robert witnessed a charter, dated to between 1221-1229 by Professor Barraclough, in which Ranulph III, earl of Chester and Lincoln, granted the monks of Stanlaw quittance from the duty of feeding his serjeants and foresters in their vill of Wynlaton (Willington in Edisbury hundred), witnessed by Philipp de Orreby then justiciar of Chester, Fulc son of Warin, Nicholas de Lettres, Geoffrey de Dutton, Thomas de Orreby, Richard de Sondbache, Richard de Kingesley, Robert le Gros Venour, Peter de Frodesham, Ranulf de Thorinton, Simon and Peter clerks, and many others.[2]
Between 1229 and 1232 (dated by Professor Barraclough), Ranulph III, earl of Chester and Lincoln, provided letters patent notifying that Robert Grosvenor had unjustly harassed the nuns of Chester in the advowson of the chapel of Budworth, and the earl had caused Robert to appear before him in court and renounce his claim in perpetuity, witnessed by the earl himself, John the Constable, Roger the butler, William de Vernoun then justiciar, Phillip de Orreby, Warin de Vernun, William de Seulant, Hamond de Mascy, William son of David, at my whole court.[3]
Robert witnessed a charter between 1233 and 1237 (dated by Professor Barraclough), in which John the Scot, earl of Chester and Huntingdon, gave the monks of Stanlaw a quittance from suit of pleas of Delamere forest for the land in Wynlaton (Willington in Edisbury hundred), unless they or their men are found with game or engaged in any manifest transgression, or if their animals are allowed to stray in the earl's forest beyond the monk's boundary, witnessed by W. then abbot of Chester, Henry de Audithelega [Audley], William de Cantelupo, junior, Richard Phitoun then justiciar of Chester, Robert de Campania, Hugh Phitoun, Richard de Sondbache, Hugh de Chelmundele, Richard de Kyngesle, Robert Gross Venatore, John de Haselwelle, Peter de Frodesham, Peter clerkm and others.[4]
On 22 May, 1241, concerning dower to be assigned, an order to the justice of Chester to cause Margery, who was the wife of Robert le Grosvenor, to have her full dower of the lands and tenements formerly of the same Robert according to the custom of the county of Chester, having retained the remainder of Robert’s lands and tenements in the king’s hand together with the sergeanty which pertains to the same lands and tenements.[5]
On 23 August, 1241, for Margery, who was the wife of Robert le Grosvenor, has made fine with the king by 22 marks for having the custody of the land and heirs of the aforesaid Robert until the legal age of the aforesaid heirs, together with their marriage. Order to John Lestrange, justice of Chester, that, having accepted security from Margery for rendering the aforesaid 22 m. to the king at two terms, namely one moiety at Easter in the twenty-sixth year and the other moiety at Michaelmas in the same year, he is to cause her to have seisin of the aforesaid custody with appurtenances.[6] Margery has letters patent for this.[7]
