Mary was born about 1843.
She married Francis Maule in Lyttelton on 18 September 1862. Her father is recorded as Mr. John Grubb of Lyttelton.
In 1874 Mary took Francis Maule to court in Lyttelton for failing to provide her with maintenance. He had removed her from their family home after a series of events including her commitment, three months in gaol, and finding men in her bed with her on more than one occasion. The case was dismissed.[2] Reading between the lines of the court proceedings as reported at the time, it's possible Mary's last baby, James Alexander, was not Francis's child. However this is only speculation and there is no evidence that Francis wasn't the father.
For several years from 1872, Mary appeared in court news facing charges of drunkenness and soliciting. She spent a great deal of time in gaol and working hard labour, with little result. She drifted between Christchurch and Wellington, recorded as a vagrant.
In 1885 she married William McCullum.
