Emily was born June 20, 1884 and it was registered in the 3rd Quarter in Barton upon Irwell registration district in Lancashire, England. She was the daughter of Frederick Rankin Gulland and Emily Plant.[1]

In the 1911 CENSUS, Emily was 26 years old, a teacher at 1195 Rockland, Victoria, British Columbia.[4]
By at least 1911, she was an artist working with oils as well as watercolours and exhibited artwork with the Island Arts & Crafts Society. Although she never married, as a teacher, she was always surrounded by children.[5]
Emily died at the age of 90 on November 20, 1974 at Lion's Gate Hospital in North Vancouver, British Columbia and was buried November 22nd in North Vancouver Cemetery. Her usual address was 2246 Marine Drive in West Vancouver.[6]
