Biography

John Gye gent of Prowse in Sandford, Devon was the son of John Gye and Elizabeth Spencer.
He married Mary Prowse, daughter of Thomas Prowse of Sandford and Joan Baynton about 1509 when her father settled land on John Gye and Mary his wife.[1][2][3] In 1516, a fine speaks of Dodderidge being held by John Gye and Mary his wife.[4] She was apparently still a child when married as she apparently did not come of age until sometime shortly before 1520. He may also have been underage at the time of marriage as he did not attempt to claim and recover the lands of his father-in-law until 1516.[5]

Name

Name: John Gye of Prowse in Sandford, Devon, England.[5][6][7]
Other spellings in primary records: Guy, Geye, Gie, Gee, Geeye, Gey, Guye, Gay, Gaye

Birth

Born: After 1498.
His parents were still unmarried at the time of the death of his grandfather Edmund Spencer in 1498.[8][9]

Marriage and Children

Married: Mary Prowse about 1509. They were apparently married as children as their son Robert in the reign of Elizabeth I sued James Courtenay for recovery of Cheriton Fitzpaine and other lands which had been settled on John Gye and Mary his wife in 1 Henry VIII (1509).[1]
Children of John Gye and Mary Prowse:
  1. Robert Gye. Born about 1531 (age 5 in 1536).

Death

Died: 14 August 1536 presumably in Devonshire, England.
Date from his IPM.
Inquisition Post Mortem:[6]
The parchment on which this proceeding was recorded in the reign of Henry VIII is eaten away along two borders and stained in the upper center; even so, enough of the text is decipherable to show that:
  • the deceased, with his wife Mary, was seized of the manors of Poughill and Doddridge, with lands in South Tawton, Crediton, Upton Hylyon, Chawleigh, Cheriton FitzPaine, South Affeton, Ermington, Kingsbridge, and Alyington, all in county Devon.
  • in 1520 when the said Mary had attained full age, they enfeoffed one Wm. Gilberd with certain of the lands for the use of their heirs.
  • the said John Gey died on 14th Aug. 1536 and that his son and heir was Robert Gey then aged five years and more.

Notes

Note: First records of the GYE family occur when in 1509, by a marriage settlement, Mary Prowse brought to her husband, John Gye, lands called "Upcott" in Cheriton Fitzpaine near poughill. In 1516, she and her husband claimed the lands of Thomas (apparently her father) in Poughill, Dodderidge, Elsington and elsewhere. John Gye was dead by 1554 and perhaps as early as ____.
