Helen Veronica Hackett was born on 30 November 1903 in Manhattan, New York. Her parents were Irish immigrants Charles Hackett and Catherine "Kate" Cashin. She was baptised six days later at the St. Paul The Apostle Church.[1]
She first appears in her parents' household in the 1905 New York Census.[2] "Hellen Haskitt", age 1-and-a-half, is said to be living at 226 West 61st Street, Manhattan, New York with her parents, Charles and Kate; an older sister (Catherine, age 3), and an uncle named William Cashin. Sadly, her father died three years later, and by 1910, the Hackett family was living at 535 West 57th Street[3], where they remained until sometime after 1920.[4]
Helen worked as a milliner.
On 21 August 1937, she married Thomas J. Campbell.[5][6] She and her mother had been boarding/working in his family's home since at least 1930.[7] The 1940 U.S. Census.[8] shows Helen and Thomas Campbell living at 41-18 53rd Street in Woodside (Queens) along with two of Helen's sisters, Mary Hackett and Margaret Parell (mistranscribed as "Rorell"); and a niece, Joan Parell. There were no children.
Helen Campbell, nee Hackett, died on 14 July 1979 in Pequannock, New Jersey.[9][10]
Research Notes
My great-grandmother, Marie McCormack Dunn, knew her cousin Helen Hackett well, as they were the same age and had grown up together. They both apprenticed in millinery shops, but only Helen went on to become a milliner. Unfortunately, I don't believe they stayed in touch beyond adulthood. - Freeth-52 00:06, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
