Biography

Vernal was born in 1899. Vernal Lyda married Dewey Ralph Walls on the 26th of March, 1918.^[1] In 1920,^[2] the couple are renting a house on 111 Extention Street in Jefferson, Greene County, Indiana. They are both 20 years old. Dewey is working as a laborer in a poultry house. Vernal is caring for their daughter Georgia who was born in March of 1919.

The census of 1930,^[3] finds the famly lving at 717 West Wylie Street in Bloomingwon, Monroe County, Indiana. They own their home which is valued at $750. Dewey is a sander in a furniture factory. Georgia P. (11) has 2 sisters:

• Francis L. (6) - a girl born in 1924 in Indiana
• Ruth O. (4) - born 1926 in Indiana

The family are in the same home in 1940^[4], although it is now valued at $600. Dewey declared that he completed the 8th grade, as did Vernal. The census lists that Dewey (41) is unable to work but has another source of income. In addition to Francis Louise (15) and Ruth (14), their mother Vernal (40) is also caring for a son named Ralph (7) who was born in 1933. In 1950,^[5] the family are living in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana at 601 Buchanan Street. Dewey (50) is an elevator operator in the State Life Building^[6] and put in 40 hours the week before the census. Ralph (17) has completed the 10th grade. He has been seeking work for 13 weeks. His previous occupation was as a salesman for a wholesale jewelry company. Georgia Pearl married Levi Owings in 1936.^[7][8] Francis married Windell Stone in 1943,^[9] and Ruth married David Lawrence in 1944.^[10]

Vernal Lyda died on the 16th of March, 1975, at the age of 75. The cause of death was gram negative (pseudomonas) septicemia. Other significant conditions were cardiac arrhythmia and congestive heart failure.^[11] Vernal was buried in the New Palestine Cemetery, New Palestine, Hancock County, Indiana.^[12]
