Biography

Ellen was born in 1832. She died in 1901 at the age of 68.

Parents: Simon Peter Hagadorn and Mary (Somers) Hagadorn.

Spouse: Willima Dorsey Nesmith 1817 - 1862. Findagrave #88292789

Eleanor was the daughter of Simon Peter Hagadorn and Mary Somers. Mary Somers was the daughter of German emigrant Peter Somers and Elizabeth Johnson. Simon Peter Hagadorn was a wagoneer in the War of 1812 and died about 1834 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. His wife Mary died 12/1/1858.

Mary and Peter were the parents of 2 sons and 4 daughters, Ellen being the youngest. She is listed in the 1850 Census with her mother and others, as Ellen Mariah Hagadorn.

Ellen M. Hagadore was married to William D. Nesmith on 5/15/1853. He had been married prior and had 2 living sons by his first marriage to Jordan M. Nesmith who was born about 1841, and John Nesmith who was born about 1848, as they are listed in her Widow's Pension documents. (Jordan was fighting with the Union Army in 1862, at which time his father died as a result of illness contracted in his service of the Union Infantry.)

William D. Nesmith and his wife Ellen were the parents of four children:

(1) Phoebe W. Nesmith, born February 17, 1854; (2) Mary E. Nesmith, born April 14, 1856; (3) William Nesmith, born January 20, 1858; and (4) Franklin H. Nesmith, born October 22, 1860.

William D. Nesmith was enrolled into the Union service on 4/22/1861 in Uniontown and mustered in at Washington D. C. on 7/29/1861 as a Corporal. He was taken ill in September of 1862, sent to the hospital near Alexandria, Virginia, located at the Fairfax Seminary. William died on 10/12/1862 and was initially buried at the hospital cemetery.

At or near the end of the war, William's remains may have been relocated to the Alexandria National Cemetery, or they may have been re-interred in Hopwood Cemetery where several members of his family are also buried.

Ellen received a Civil War widow's pension for the rest of her life based on the service and death of her husband.
