Lawrence was born in 1890. He was the son of Howell Haines and Ida Mills. Lawrence’s father was descended from Quakers. The progenitor of his family came to America in the 1600s. Coincidentally, Lawrence’s mother was the daughter of Rachel Trautman Haines, but Rachel’s name had originally been the German Haehns.
Lawrence was born in the tiny town of Ong, Nebraska. Ong was “platted in 1886 when the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad was extended to that point.” Ong’s largest recorded population was 285 in 1910, but has steadily declined. In 2020, the population was 49, and it seems destined to become a ghost town. We can only speculate as to why Lawrence’s parents were drawn there, but Ong was the place of birth of their two eldest children.
Soon after Lawrence was born, however, the family moved to his father’s birthplace, Chester County, Pennsylvania. It seems likely that they went home to comfort and assist Lawrence’s grandmother after the death of his grandfather in 1890.
By the time Lawrence was 9 years old, the family had moved again, this time to their permanent home in Gurnee, Lake County, Illinois. There, Lawrence’s father established his blacksmithing shop and Lawrence grew to manhood.
Lawrence married Nomine L “Minnie” Christiansen, the daughter of Mathias P Christiansen and Juliane M Nissen. According to FamilySearch, Lawrence and Minnie were married on 23 February 1915, but no source is cited. The couple settled on a farm near Waukegan in Warren Township, Lake County, Illinois. They had six children, one of whom died at only 3 days old.
Lawrence died at just 42 years old in Warren Township, Lake County, Illinois on 15 November 1932.
