Biography

Jeremiah was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia in March of 1843 and baptized there on March 18. He was a son of Maurice Hallihan and Elizabeth (Daley) Hallihan.[1]

His family moved to Newfoundland when he was young but he returned to Nova Scotia, attending school at Saint Mary's College.

Jeremiah trained to be a carpenter and joiner, working in many communities. He worked in Little Glace Bay (NS), Portland (Maine), Boston (Massachusetts) and Brooklyn (New York). In the latter, he established a business.

At some point likely during this period, he married an unknown first wife. (He was listed as widowed at the time of his second marriage in 1903).

At some point between 1843 and the 1880s, he began using the surname spelling HALLERAN.

He later moved to Newfoundland and set up a factory which manufactured wood products as well as running a contracting business.

In 1889, he was elected to the Newfoundland House of Assembly as representative for Saint John's East under the Liberal Party banner.

In 1892, a fire destroyed much of the city of St. John's including Halleran's Factory. A committee on rebuilding the city was struck, with Jeremiah serving as one if it's members.

In the 1893 election, he ran as an independent. His reasons for leaving the Liberal Party are unknown however Newfoundland was embroiled in a number of controversial issues at the time related to fisheries, the railroad and relationships with both Canada and the United States.

He did not remain in Newfoundland many more years. He was recorded as a member of the Saint John's Mechanics Society as late as 1894 but left Newfoundland shortly thereafter.

He married (2) Ellen F. (Dyer) Earle, a young widow from Newfoundland, in Boston on September 6, 1903. She was a daughter of Richard Dyer and Margaret (Ryan) Dyer.[2]

Research Notes

  • A number of genealogies cite a death date of 1925 for Jeremy and state that his place of death was in Saint John, New Brunswick. The New Brunswick death records for 1925 are quite complete and I can find no record of this nor a cemetery listing in likely cemeteries. He appears to have been in the United States for much of his time after leaving Newfoundland based on other records. Evans-29543 05:14, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
