Biography

Record Change 7 MAY 2007. Marriage of Samuel Langdon & Betsey Bichard at the Town Church, St. Peter Port.

Samuel Langdon aged 27 years, son of William of Stafford in Somersetshire & Betsy Margaret Bichard aged 25 years, daughter of Peter of St. Sampson’s were married by licence on 2 August 1854.

Civil death record for Betsey Bichard.

Elizabeth Margaret Bichard, widow of Samuel Langdon, aged 88, daughter of Peter Bichard & Marie Le Poidevin, died on 27 June 1916. Place of death was at her home in the Vale Road, St. Sampson’s. Place of birth was Grosse Longue, St. Sampson’s & the cause of death was given as “senile decay”.

Marriage of Pierre Bichard & Marie Le Poidevin at St. Sampson’s Church.

Pierre Bichard, son of Pierre Bichard & Marie Le Poidevin, daughter of Pierre Le Poidevin, were married together in the Church of St. Sampson, 23 October 1819 by licence.

Baptisms of their children at St. Sampson’s Church.

1. Marie, born 12 March 1820 & “baptised in particular because of illness” 24 March & “presented at Church” 9 April following. Godparents: Pierre le Poidevin. Marguerite de Garis & Jeanne Le Poidevin.

[One wonders whether this child Marie survived. She is not on the 1841 census although could have left home by that date. I can find no infant burial record]

2. Pierre, born 13 October 1824 & baptised 31 of the same month. Godparents: Pierre Blampied, Thomas le Poidevin & Judith Hallouvris.

3. Sophie Carterette, born 24 October 1827 & baptised 11 November following. Godparents: Pierre Le Poidevin, Carterette Robilliard & Rachel Le Poidevin

4. Betsey Marguerite, born 19 October 1830 & baptised 31 of the same month. Godparents: William Bichard, Susanne Priaulx & Marie Bichard.

[This is your Betsey Bichard & godparents William & Susanne she is found with on 1841 census]

5. Susanne, born 25 January 1832 & baptised “because of a sickness” the 4 February following. Godparents: Jean Le Poidevin, Susanne de France & Rachel Bichard.

[Presumably Susanne may not have survived long after her illness as she is not on the 1841census]

6. Jean, born 28 April 1833 & baptised 12 May following. Godparents: Pierre Carré, Pierre Langlois & Elizabeth Le Poidevin.

7. Margueritte Mary, born 21 February & baptised 6 March 1836. Godparents: Thomas Langlois, Margueritte Langlois & Rachel Bichard.

These are the seven children born to “your” Pierre Bichard & Marie Le Poidevin whose baptismal records I have been able to separate out from those belonging to the other couple bearing identical names with the help of the 1841 census. I am reasonably happy that I have sorted them out correctly. It would seem that out of their seven children, only four can be found on the 1841 census. As two were sickly at birth, we learn from their baptismal records, it is very likely that they died & it was quite usual for infant deaths not to be recorded. This was probably the case with all three children not found on the 1841 census, Marie, Susanne & Margueritte Mary Bichard.

In a position now to start working back, I next looked for Marie Le Poidevin’s burial record to try to establish whether she died a widow or not.

Burial of Marie Le Poidevin at St. Sampson’s Church.

Marie Le Poidevin, widow of Pierre Bichard, died 15 June 1867 & was buried 18 of the same month aged 69 years.

This established that Pierre had already died & I found that there was only one Pierre Bichard, son of Pierre to have been buried at St. Sampson’s Church between 1836 & 1867 which has to be our man!

Burial of Pierre Bichard at St. Sampson’s Church.

Pierre Bichard, son of Pierre was buried 5 November 1852 aged 60 years 10 months.

Now this was a breakthrough, being given his exact age at the time of death & from this I was able to find his baptism to the exact month. Had we not been given this precise information, it may have been very difficult to find & validate a baptism with Pierre Bichard being a fairly common name in the parish of St. Sampson’s. However I looked for a Baptism for Pierre Bichard, son of Pierre born in January/February 1792 in the St. Sampson’s Church register & was immediately rewarded with the following entry which is undoubtedly the right one:

Pierre, son of Pierre Bichard & Marie Hallouvris his wife was born 5 January 1792 & baptised 6 January 1792. Godparents: Pierre Hallouvris & Jeanne Robin.

Immediately further verification of this as the right record lies in the name Hallouvris as there was a Judith Hallouvris who stood as godparent for Pierre Bichard, son of Pierre & Marie Le Poidevin baptised in 1824. What’s more, on my “journey” through the St. Sampson’s registers I noticed that there is a Jean Bichard married to a Caroline Hallouvris producing children at the same time as Pierre Bichard & Marie Hallouvris & …… Jeanne Robin is a godparent they share in common. This may well be two sisters having married two brothers I thought & in fact the latter part of the research indeed seems to reveal Jean & Caroline as part of your family tree.

Next I looked for siblings for Pierre, further children born to Pierre Bichard & Marie Hallouvris. Including Pierre, born in 1792, I found four baptisms in the St. Sampson’s Church Register. Pierre was their firstborn.

The children of Pierre Bichard & Marie Hallouvris baptised at St. Sampson’s Church.

1. Pierre [see previous page]

2. Nicholas, born 9 February 1793 & baptised on the same day. Godparents: Nicholas Bourgaize & Anne Duport.

3. William, born 21 August & baptised 24 August 1794. Godparents: William Owen & Mary Owen.

4. Marie, born 19 February & baptised 22 February 1796. Godparents: Jean Bichard & Marie Mulot.

Next I looked for the Marriage of Pierre Bichard to Marie Hallouvris. This event again took place at St. Sampson’s Church:

Pierre Bichard & Marie Hallouvris, both of St. Sampson’s parish were married together in St. Sampson’s Church on 7 December 1791.

Unfortunately here we start to hit problems as you can see that no names of parents were included in the above record. I was able to find the Burial record for Marie Hallouvris quite easily which reads as follows:

Marie Hallouvris, widow of Pierre Bichard was buried in St. Sampson’s Cemetery on 31 January 1800.

So from this we know that husband Pierre had died before 1800 & as their last child was born in 1796, at least this narrowed things down to a band of 4 years. However, could I find a burial record for our Pierre? No such luck I’m afraid, nor in any Church records of nearby parishes. However I did find what I believe to be his baptism in 1769 although it cannot be absolutely proved. The evidence I put before you from the records, offers you pieces of a genealogical jigsaw which seem to fit. Note godparents from previous records, Anne Duport & Jeanne Robin turning up now as central figures in the family. Here is the Baptism I believe to be that of Pierre Bichard [husband of Marie Hallouvris & grandfather to Betsey Bichard] found in St. Sampson’s Church register:

1. Pierre, son of Etienne Bichard & Anne Duport was baptised 10 September 1769. Godparents: Jean Bichard & Lorence Domaille.

I found three siblings for Pierre, who was the eldest child, two of which were baptised in St. Sampson’s Church & the other one in the Vale Parish Church. Note that in most cases we are only given the date of baptism. Here are the rest in chronological order:

2. Jean, son of Etienne Bichard & Anne Duport was baptised 7 April 1771 at St. Sampson’s Church. Godparents: Nicholas Bichard & Genette Vachinneton*

  • Vachinneton=Washington

Baptisms of children born to Etienne Bichard & Anne Duport con.

3. Nicholas, son of Etienne Bichard & Anne Duport, born 18 & baptised 24 September 1775 at the Vale Parish Church. Godparents: David Le Gouby & Judith Duport.

4. Etienne, son of Etienne Bichard & Anne Duport, was baptised 14 June 1778. Godparents: Jean Bichard senior & Judith Duport.

Marriage of Etienne Bichard & Anne Duport at St. Sampson’s Church.

Etienne Bichard, son of Jean and Anne Duport, daughter of Pierre, both of this parish, were married on 12 April 1769.

Baptism of Marie Hallouvris [wife of Pierre Bichard & grandmother to Betsey Bichard] at St. Sampson’s Church.

Marie, daughter of Pierre Hallouvris junior & Janne* Robin was baptised 24 June 1776. Godparents: Thomas Robin & Marie Corbel

  • Janne=Jeanne

Confirming my earlier assumption as regards Jean Bichard, brother to Pierre, having married Caroline Hallouvris, sister to Marie, that marriage record is to be found in the St. Sampson’s Marriage Register:

Jean, son of Etienne Bichard & Caroline Hallouvris, daughter of Pierre, both of St. Sampson’s were married on 7 December 1795.
