James was born in 1771. He was the son of John Hamilton and Isabella Stewart.

James married Hon. Helen Pakenham, sister of Thomas, Earl of Longford, in 1799.

1. John married (1) Mary Rose, 2nd daughter of Hugh Rose, of Calrossie (who assumed the name of Ross of Cromarty) on 1 May 1823. (2) Mary Simpson, eldest daughter of George Simpson, of Pitcorthie, co. Fife, on 29 April 1858.
2. Edward Michael (Rev.), Rector of Drumconrath, b. 1802 ; married Martha Anne Fortescue
3. Catherine, b. 1803 ; married Rev. W. H. Foster, Rector of Loughgilly

He died in 1805.
