Biography

Norman was born in 1894 in Canley Vale, NSW, the son of Edward Hanbury and his wife Mary Louisa, nee Gobey.

Norman was a carpenter, initially working for Hirst Bros. of Cabramatta and then for his father, Edward Hanbury, a prominent builder in the Cabramatta & Canley Vale area. He suffered an injury to his thumb in 1910 while working for Hirst Bros.[1] Prior to enlisting in the Australian Army in WW1 he was erecting weatherboard cottages around Cabramatta for about 5 years.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 31 May 1915 at Liverpool, NSW as a Private.[2] At the time he was a carpenter and was living with his father in Cabramatta, NSW. He was presented with a razor and wallet prior to departure.[3]

On 29 Nov 1917 he applied to become an Australian Munitions Worker under a joint Australian government/ British government scheme to supply skilled workers for the War effort in the UK. At the time he was living in Cabramatta, NSW with his father.

He was allocated to 7th Reinforcements, 3rd Bn (No.1087). He was temporarily transferred to the Trench Mortar Bn as an A/Cpl on 07 Dec 1915, but rejoined 3rd Bn on 21 Mar 1916 and reverted to Private. After a course at the Trench Mortar School, Ebblingham, England he was transferred to 1/2 Trench Mortar Bty at Moolnacher(?) on 15 Apr 1916. He was wounded in action in France (gun shot wound, left leg) on 30 May 1916. After being transferred to hospital in Portsmouth, England on the Hospital Ship "Marama" he returned to Australia on the SS "Benalla", departing Plymouth, England on 13 Feb 1917. He was discharged in Sydney on 12 Jul 1917.[4]

He was accepted and his agreement was signed on 01 Dec 1917.[5] He was issued with Australian Munitions Worker Badge No. 3772 and embarked on the SS "Beltana" from Melbourne, VIC on 19 Jan 1918. His father was a Munitions Worker on the same ship. He arrived at the Royal Albert Docks, London on 22 Mar 1919.

He commenced work with Messrs. Wills & Sons at Osea Island on 24 Mar 1918 as a carpenter (as did his father) and was transferred to the Woolwich Arsenal Building Department in Slough in Sep 1918 (as was his father).

Norman returned to Australia on the SS "Bahia Castillo", with his father, departing Devonport, England on 18 Jul 1919. His agreement was terminated on 20 Oct 1919 as complete, on arrival in Sydney.

Norman married Linda Myrtle Wood in Cabramatta, NSW on 13 Mar 1920.[6]There were 3 children.

He suffered from an infection on his face in 1925, attributed to a fly sting.[7]

Norman served as an Alderman for Cabra-Vale Council from 1928-32 including as Mayor in 1931.[8]

During WW2 he enlisted in the Australian Army Militia on 29 Dec 1941 as a Private (N387770) at the Recruiting Depot in Paddington, NSW. At the time he was a poultry farmer and living in Cabramatta. He was 5 ft 9 in tall, had fair hair, blue eyes and a gun shot wound to the lower left leg.

Norman served with the 2nd Garrison Bn and was appointed A/Lance Cpl on 09 May 1942. He was appointed A/Specialist Trade Group II (Carpenter) on 23 Jan 1943 and was qualified as a riveter on 21 Dec 1942.

On 05 Apr 1945 he reverted to Private and was transferred to the Kembla Area Workshops for the Electrical & Mechanical Engineers. His rank became Craftsman on transfer. He was discharged on 30 Aug 1945, being required for employment in an essential occupation.

In 1946 he was President of the Cabra-Vale Ex-Servicemen's Club.[9] He was still active with the Club in 1964.[10]

He died in 1972.
