James Hancock was baptised on 27 Aug 1780 in Chacombe, Northamptonshire, England. He was the son of Thomas Hancock and Sarah Dumbleton [1]
James Hancock (bachelor) was married to Mary Wild (spinster) on 29th October 1811 in Middleton Cheney, Northamptonshire, after banns. [2]
In 1841, James Hancock (60, ag. lab.) and his wife Mary (55) were living in Chacombe, Northamptonshire, in the house of James's father, Thomas Hancock (80, parish clerk). Three of their children, Thomas (25, a framework knitter), John (20) and Elizabeth (14) were also living with them. [3]
In 1851, James Hancock (70, born in Middleton Cheney, now a framework knitter) and Mary (67, born in Chacombe,) were living in Chacombe. Their son, Thomas (36, born in Chacombe) and his wife, Ann (38, born in Cropredy) were living with them. Mary was recorded as a framework knitter and Thomas was dittoed, but the enumerator has crossed framework knitter out and written lace across the two lines, leaving the ditto. I imagine they must have either been producing knitted lace using a knitting frame, or the frame had been adapted for bobbin lacemaking (possible but less likely, given the initial statement that they were framework knitting). [4]
James Hancock (73) was buried on Christmas Day, 25th December 1853, in Chacombe, Northamptonshire. [5]
