When Johann Arnold Maximilian Ferdinand Haniel was born on January 22, 1813, in Ruhrort, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, his father, Franz Haniel, was 33 and his mother, Fritze Friederica, was 28.[1][2]
His father Johannes Franciscus Haniel, founder of a trading and forwarding company, acquired the "Gutehoffnungshütte" in Sterkrade, and was a mine owner. Johann became an industrialist in Ruhrort; estate and mine owner; member of the supervisory board of the Rheinische Stahlwerke in Meiderich (1870-1878).
He married Nancy Friedericke Cockerill and they had two children together. He then married Pauline Clara Amalie Caroline von Schaper on August 26, 1856, in Potsdam, Brandenburg, Germany.[3]
He died on June 10, 1887, in his hometown at the age of 74.
