McCLAIN, 100, a resident of Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Chambersburg, and formerly of S. Washington Street, Greencastle, PA went to be with her Heavenly Father, Wednesday, August 14, 2013 in the nursing home. Born November 22, 1912 in Blue Ridge Summit, PA, she was the daughter of the late Albert Lee Happel and Elsie May (Welty) Happel. Mr. Happel was the original owner of Happel's Meadow, as it is still known today. Mr. Happel grew celery in the meadow and other produce for his store. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar L. "Mac" McClain who died July 16, 1990; two sisters, Cora E. Happel Bender and Sarah K. Happel Gardner; and a brother, B. Albert Happel. Mrs. McClain is survived by her son, Paul L. McClain and his wife, Vickie; her daughter, Caryl A. McClain Sanders and her husband, Terry, both of Greencastle; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three nieces; and two nephews. Mrs. McClain graduated from Waynesboro High School with the class of 1931 where she played basketball during her high school years and was known as "Happy". She attended Illmans College, an affiliate of the University of Pennsylvania, located near Philadelphia, graduating with a two year degree in elementary education. She also attended Duke University prior to her marriage in 1937. She was a member of the Greencastle Presbyterian Church, serving as a deacon and was a former member of Hawley Memorial Presbyterian Church in Blue Ridge Summit. She was a member of the Greencastle Lioness and the Greencastle Loyal Daughters. Ethel loved to garden and was especially partial to her rose bushes. She obtained her Real Estate License and assisted her husband in real estate sales for several years. Ethel enjoyed sewing, knitting and at the age of 85 began to paint oil paintings Ethel's favorite past time was spending time with her grandchildren. Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, August 16, 2013 in Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington Street, Greencastle with Pastor Steven Fleming officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral home.
