His father died when he was only 16 years old (1935), and he got into some trouble after this and was sent to a Borstal (youth detention centre) in 1939.

He was sentenced to 6 months hard labour in 1944, after stealing from a lodger in his widowed mother's house.

He died on 15 June 1945, age 26, from cancer of the intestine. His death was witnessed by his mother, C.M. Harding at her house at 9 Devonshire Square Southsea.
