Biography

Norah was born on 9 March 1906 at Junction Brickyard, Thirsk, Yorkshire, the daughter of Sydney Hare, a brickmaker (journeyman), and Annie Elizabeth Buckton. The informant of her birth was her father Sydney Hare, of the same address. [1]

In the 1911 census Norah was living with her family at Buckyard [Brickyard?] Cottage, Thirsk Junction, Yorkshire. She was aged 5 years. [2]

In the 1929 to 1933 electoral rolls Norah and brother Harry resided at The Poplars, Gale Lane, Acomb, York, Yorkshire, later recorded as 159 Gale Lane, Acomb. Their parents were also living at this address from 1930. [3]

Norah Hare married Robert H Wrigglesworth in 1932. [4] Robert was a widower with four known children.

This couple had one daughter named Norah Elizabeth Wrigglesworth born in 1936. She died that same year in infancy.

Robert Henry Wrigglesworth died on 24 January 1936 on the railway line at Otterington Railway Station aged 37 years of multiple injuries received by being knocked down by a railway engine. His death was ruled an accident and there was no post mortem. His death certificate further recorded Robert's address at that time was 5 North Eastern Crescent, Leeman Rd, York. He was employed as a relief signalman and porter by London and North Eastern Railway Company. [5]

He was buried on 27 January 1936 at Acomb. The burial register recorded his address as c/o 159 Gale Lane, Acomb, Norah's parents home. He was aged 37 years. [6]

From The Leeds Mercury dated 30 January 1936, Pg 5 -
JUMPED WRONG WAY. At Thirsk, yesterday, a verdict of "Accidental death" was returned at the adjourned inquest on Robert Henry Wrigglesworth (37), of 5, North Eastern Crescent, York, a relief porter-signalman, who was knocked down and killed by a light engine travelling from Newcastle to York, near Otterington last Friday. Lieut. Colonel Innes N. Ware sat with a jury of seven.
Robert Peacock, of 29, Kensington Street, South Bank, York, said that as he was bringing a light engine back from Newcastle he saw Wrigglesworth in a half-turning position, talking and gesticulating to the driver of a train going north. Wrigglesworth heard witness’s warning shout but jumped the wrong way. [7]

Robert died before their daughter was born.

In the 1936 electoral roll Nora [sic] was residing at 101 Gale Lane, Acomb. Then in 1937 and 1938 she was living at 216 Gale Lane. And in 1939 at 51 Stuart Rd, York, a council house. [8]

The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time Norah was still living at 51 Stuart Road, York. Born 9 March 1906, she was aged 33. Also living there was her stepdaughter Audrey Wrigglesworth, born 11 November 1920. Aged 18, she was working as a laundry hand. Her surname was later amended to her married name of Bowles. Records for three other children remain closed at this time [2019]. [9]

Norah had a son born in 1945.

Norah was the sole beneficiary of her sister Vera Barrett's estate following her death on 9 January 1991. Norah was then living at 34 Nunnery Lane, York.

Norah Wrigglesworth died in 1998 aged 92 years. [10]
