Biography

JOHN JOSEPH HARNEY, Milan, Pennsylvania (1940-2010)

John J. Harney was born in 1940, in Freeport, Long Island, NY, the son of Edward John Harney and Anna Cahill. John's father, and grandfather Patrick Harney, came to New York on board the "Britannic", 2 September 1898. Patrick had immigrated to NYC in August 1881 and was Naturalized in 1887. He returned to Ireland in 1895, after the death of his first wife. He married again in Ireland, where his son Edward John was born.

John J. Harney is very active in conservation, environmental resources protection, and waste management. He is a retired New York City Fire Officer, and also chairman of several hazardous waste advisory committees and conservation groups. He also runs Harland Farm, silviculture and mixed crops. John J. is chairman of the Irish Hills Historical Society, PA; and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church 100th Anniversary Committee (established by Irish immigrants in 1843). He is president of the Elmira, New York, A.O. H., and serves on the National A.O.H. Committees for the "Great Hunger" memorials and "Buy Irish".

John J. and his wife, the former Barbara Starr [or Bauer], have four living children.

John J. and Barbara visited Ireland in 1989, 1990 and 1993 in an attempt to trace the history of the Harneys in the Ballinasloe area, County Galway, near the border of County Roscommon. They have done considerable research on the Harney families in this area.

While in Ireland (1990) they met with Mary Harney, Minister of State for the Environment, whose family stems from the same part of Ireland as John's. They are distant cousins of Mary Harney. John and Barbara returned to Ireland in Feb-Mar 1995, for a winter view, and planned another trip in August of 1995. John Harney died 26 Mar 2010.

Obituary from Find-a-Grave: John was a 1958 graduate of Mepham High School in Bellmore, N.Y., and subsequently attended SUNY Farmingdale. He served bravely in the Fire Department of New York for 17 years, retiring as lieutenant, while at the same time volunteering with the North Merrick Fire Department. John strived for excellence in fire training and served as an instructor at the Nassau County Fire Training Center.

Soon after relocating his family to a country homestead in the Irish Hills of Ridgebury from the suburbs of New York City, John became immersed in environmental and citizen activism through his work with B-CAUSE, PURE, and RULE. He believed strongly in education and was proud of his children's Catholic education at Notre Dame High School, and their further educational progress in advanced degrees.

Proud of his Irish heritage, John maintained dual citizenship with the United States and Ireland, traveled to Ireland frequently, and was an active member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians - Msgr. John J. Lee Division, where he had served as president. John was very gifted with his hands and excelled in carpentry, woodworking, plumbing, and electric. He was a perfectionist; persistent and dedicated to hard work. John studied history, politics, and current affairs. But most importantly he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, finding a soft spot in his heart through his grandchildren, and his son and two grandsons share his name.
