James was born on 17 July, 1834 in Ann Arbor[1]. He was the son of James Harrington and Almira Burlingame. On Jam. 12, 1858 James married Ann Conaty in Lydon, Washtenaw Co., MI[2]. He enlisted on Sept. 7, 1861 with Company A of 1st Michigan Engineer and Mechanics as a Private. Corporal 5 JAN, 1862. He reenlisted as 1st Sergeant of the same unit on 19 March, 1864. James mustered out at Nashville, TN on 22 Sept, 1865 [3]During the war, he had been wounded by an ax on the shin.[4].
He had been a painter and decorator[5][6]. In 1877, he was partner with his half brother, Sydney D Harrington under the name Harrington Bros. as painters[7]. On 1 Jan., 1883 James F. is listed as a tax payer in the village of Chelsea[8]. Feb 1, 1883 James Harrington put up the ceiling paper in the opera house[9]. On 8 Feb., 1883 James is painting the new town hall[10]. [11]. His 49th birthday was celebrated by 50 of his friends in week of 17 July, 1883[12]. In Apr., 1885, James rented rooms in Chelsea[13].
In 1890 James F was still living in Chelsea and was a member of I.O.G.T.[14]. Feb., 1894 James and wife entertained Mrs Albert Harrington of Chicago[15].
James Harrington was at Grand Rapids last week Wednesday and Thursday (Oct. 11 &12, 1899) attending a reunion of his old regiment[16]. Later in 1899, James opened a paint shop in the Faist Building on Middle Street west (Chelsea)[17].
James moved to Detroit sometime in late 1900 or early 1901 where he continued to be a painter. Between 1901 and 1908 his address was at 241 Howard, Detroit[18][19][20][21]. Although living in Detroit during his last years, he visited Chelsea often. He was there on 7 Sept., 1901[22]. Again on 28 July, 1907 James and daughter Dora visited in Chelsea[23]. On 21 July, 1909 James was in Chelsea for the homecoming[24]. In early Dec., 1909 James and daughter Dora visited Chelsea[25]. In early January of 1910 James contracted pneumonia[26]. His brother in law and grandniece visited him in Detroit in Sept., 1910[27]. In 1911 he visited Chelsea friends[28], June, 1912[29]. And in Dec of 1912 James and his brother-in-law, James Conaty visited Chelsea for Christmas[30]. Apparently James Conaty had moved to Detroit since 1909. James visited Chelsea in 1913[31], June, 1914[32], June 1915[33] and on 4 June, 1918[34].
And sometimes friends and relatives in Chelsea visited James in Detroit[35].
He passed away on 18 March,1921 in Detroit, Wayne Co., MI. The cause of death was senility general failure.[36]He was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Chelsea, Washtenaw Co., MI on 19 March, 1921[37][38]
