Daily Times, Clay County, Kansas; October 18, 1887 -- "Mrs. Sarah Cain, mother of John Cain living southeast of this city, died yesterday of spinal disease at the home of her son"

Abstract of Obituary: October 21, 1887, The Daily Times, Clay Center, Kansas ---Together in Life and Death - "On the 17th of October Mrs. A. J. Cain bade farewell to all earthly relatives and parted with her aged husband. Thursday, Mr. A. J. Cain followed his companion in life to that "bourne from whence no traveler returns." In the removal from among us of this venerable pioneer, who with his beloved wife so recently taken away, had by a life of honor and respectability, been endeared to all who knew them, the sympathies called out by social bereavement and honest response in the feelings of neighbors and friends throughout this entire county. This old couple lived and labored together in life and he seemingly felt that he would follow his wife, and the old people fled together. Mr. Cain came to this county in July, 1856 and was one of the prominent men in the early settlement of our county, never faltering in his belief on her bright future. For the past few years he has been quite an invalid and had given up all business pursuits, residing with his son Jacob at whose residence he died of sciatic rheumatism on Thursday at the age of 75 years. They leave two sons, John and Jacob and three daughters, Mrs. L. D. Clark, Mrs. Collet and Emily Cain, all residing in this county, to mourn the loss of their kind and indulgent parents. The funeral takes place from the residence of Jacob Cain, Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, the remains being laid side by side in the Gatesville cemetery."
