C.L. Harris wrote "She raised five children, Lyuna, John, Lillly, William and Pet, a nic-name. She was never able to enjoy life after the birth of her children. Her husband, S.P. Brittain was very cruel and unkind to her and her chilldren. She suffered greatly from a complication of deseases and died in Rutherfordton in 1905."

The Rutherfordton Tribune, Vol IV No.22, Thursday June 2, 1904, page 3, col 2: "Mrs. Sallie Brittain Dead. After an illness of Several Months Death Relieves Her Suffering. On Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. Mrs. Sallie Brittain died after an illness of three or four months at her home in this place. She was a daughter of Washington Harris deceased of this county, and was born and reared in Chimney Rock. She was a sister of Dr. J.W. Harris of this place, Hon. C.L. Harris, of Raleigh and Mrs. Thomas Wilkins of Henrietta, all whom survive her. She was the wife of Sam Brittan who died some ten or twelve years ago in Hendersonville where they resided. Of her immediate family a son and daughter had died some years ago. She leave three surviving children, Mrs. J. R. Swan of Marshal, Will C. Rittain and Miss Mary Brittain of Rutherfodrdton. She was a member of the Episcopal church and was noted for her many virtues. Her remains left on the Southern at 10 o'clock yesterday where they will be interred by those of her husband and her two children."
