The parents and year of birth of John Harris are unknown.

John Harris married Jane Richmond, daughter of Henry Richman/Richmond of Christian Malford, Wiltshire.[1]

John Harris of Charlcott married Jane (Jeane) Richmond of Christian Malford on the 7th day of the 4th month 1666 (Quaker marriage) i.e., 07 Jun 1666.[2]

In 1736 a letter by Jane Richmond's nephew Oliffe Richmond referred to:[3]

"Jane mother to Cousin John Harris of Baghurst in Hampshire a woolstapler very rich"

  • Sarah Harris (born the 27th day of the 3rd month 1669 i.e. 27 May 1669, daughter of John of 'Great Acre')[4]
  • Jane/Joane Harris (born the 11th day of the 1st month 1671 i.e. 11 Mar 1670/1671, daughter of John of 'Goat Acre')[4]
  • John Harris (born the 25th day of the 1st month 1674 i.e. 25 Mar 1674, son of John and Joane of 'Goataker'[4]; of Baughurst, Hampshire; died 1736)
  • Hannah Harris (born the 4th day of the 5th month 1678 i.e. 04 Jul 1678, daughter of John of 'Goataker')[4]
  • Mary Harris (born the 24th day of the 8th month 1680 i.e. 24 Oct 1680, daughter of John of Goatacre)[4]

Career

  • 04 Aug 1667: He was one of the bondsmen at the wedding of Oliffe Richmond and Ann Marsh.[1]

John Harris of Goatacre, Hilmarton, Wiltshire, died on the 14th day of the second month 1693, i.e. 14 Apr 1693.[5]

John Harris was buried on 16 Apr 1693 at Hilmarton, Wiltshire.[6]

The will of John Harris of Goatacre in the parish of Hillmarton, Wiltshire, clothier, was dated 01 Apr 1693 and proved 09 Jun 1693.[1]

He made bequests to:

  • his son Samuel
  • his son John Harris (who was then an apprentice) "all my land in Pensylvania"
  • the Charlcott meeting 10 Ii.

The residue of his estate, moneys, goods, etc. he bequeathed to his four daughters Sarah, Jane, Hannah and Mary, to be equally divided between them.

His wife Jane and son Samuel were the Executors.

His friends Jonathan Scott of Bremhill, clothier, and Roger Cook of Calne, yeoman, were Overseers.

Research Notes

John, son of John Harris of Goatcre: "John Harris lived at Baughurst House, which he built in 1693. His wife was Mary Potter, said to be a daughter or sister of Richard Potter, and the initials of M. P. and J. H. are still to be seen on the central gable of their house." .... "Mr. John Harris's will, which was proved, in 1736, has this clause in it : " I give my son my little meadow at Townsend and after his death I give the same for the use and behoof of the People commonly called Quakers belonging to the Meeting of Baughurst and Brimpton for a burying ground for ever."[7]
