Biography

Lina was born in 1869 in New Jersey. Her first name was spelled variously Emeline, Emelina, Emaline and Emelyn. She was the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Hart and Emeline Amelia MacDowell. In the 1870 census Emeline (age 0) was in Hoboken, Hudson, New Jersey, United States.^[1]

In the 1880 census Emeline (age 10), At School, was the daughter of Benjamin F. Hart in Hoboken, Hudson, New Jersey, United States.^[2]

In the 1892 census Lina (age 23) was in Candor, Tioga, New York, United States.^[3]

Emeline (age 24), daughter of Benj. Franklin Hart & Emeline Amelia MacDowell, married Henry L "Harry" Simpson (age 29) on 23 January 1894 in New York County, New York, United States.^[4]

In the 1910 census Emaline (age 40) was the wife of Henry L Simpson in Cortlandt, Westchester, New York, United States.^[5]

Henry must have passed away before 1915.

Emeline (age 37), daughter of Benjamin F. & Emeline A. MacDowell, married Varanous Otto Neale (age 32), son of Thomas J Neale and Sarah Goryh, on 21 June 1915 in Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States.^[6]

In the 1920 census, Emelyn appears to have been indexed separately from her family^[7] despite being with them on the original record, in which she is the wife of one Varencus O Nelle - see image. The children, with their Simpson surnames, are all on the record.^[8]

Her daughter Alice Alexandria married in 1928 in New York, but by 1930 she and her new husband, and Lina and her sons were all in Los Angeles. Varanous had passed away by then and Lina reverted to her first husband's surname.

In the 1930 census Emelyn (age 60) was the widowed head of household in Los Angeles (Districts 0001-0250), Los Angeles, California, United States.^[9]

Her son Harry adopted the stage name "John Darrow" and established himself as an actor, later an agent.

In the 1950 census Lina (age 80) was the widowed head of household in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California, United States.^[10]

Lina, daughter of Hart & Macdowell, died (age 83) on 17 February 1953 in Los Angeles, California, United States.^[11] She was buried in Glendale, Los Angeles, California, United States.^[12]
