Biography

Alexander was born in 1583. His parents were Thomas Hartley and Jane Mawde.

Alexander passed away in 1616.

Research Notes

Looking for sources.... No baptism found for Alexander at Bingley on Ancestry, Find my Past, or FamilySearch. The parents married 19 May 1582 and son Thomas was baptised 25 April 1583 so Alexander would have to be born no earlier than 1584. Son John attached here was baptised at Ecclesfield near Sheffield in 1613^[1], so the likely marriage of Alexander would be 1593 in Ecclesfield to Elizabeth Barnsley (there are other children of the marriage born before John).^[2] However this would make Alexander's birth about 1570.

Online trees show burial in Wakefield 1616, could not find one but there is a burial in Wakefield 30 October 1630. ^[3] The only Yorkshire burial found for 1616 is Alexander Hartley of Sheffield 15 June 1616.^[4] This is probably the Alexander Hartley who married Ann Trippett at Sheffield 1600 and had several children there.^[5]

Alexander Hartley of Ecclesfield has been merged into Thomas Hartley of Bingley on FamilySearch and Thomas now has all Alexander's records attached, as well as his wife, which may be the source of the confusion.^[6]

Suggest this Alexander is treated as Alexander Hartley of Ecclesfield, father of the attached John. Note, son John of Ecclesfield may not be the same person as John of Wakefield who married there 1639 and 1642.
