Doris was the only child born to Norcross Needham Hartwell and Florence Jane Chapple of Worcester, MA. She was a graduate of Lesley College in Cambridge, MA, and was kindergarten teacher in Brattleboro, VT, and Durham, NH.

She married Ralph Hawthorne Granger, Sr., on June 30, 1939, at home in Arlington, MA. They had two sons and one daughter.

Prior to WWII, married women were not allowed to teach. In 1950, Doris returned to teaching when her third child became of school age. She continued to teach kindergarten in Durham, NH, until she retired in 1976.

Doris was a community volunteer as a member and past president of the Lee, NH, Fire Dept. Auxiliary, member and past president of the Lee Historical Society, member and past president of the Strafford County Home Health Association, and others.

Doris was well-known for her ability to play the piano. She was an active member of the American Bell Association and collected more than 800 bells.
