Biography

Francis was born in Westerleigh, Gloucestershire on 18 September 1844 and baptised there on 20 October 1844.^[1] He is the son of Richard Hathway and Emma Gibbs.

He was recorded in the 1851 Census in his parent's household at Nuttridge Hill, Westerleigh.^[2]

Francis has not been located in the 1861 Census.

He married Ann Watts on 26 January 1865 at All Saints, Bristol.^[3][4]

In the 1871 Census Francis was described as a Farmer Of 100 Acres. He was living at Westerleigh with his wife, their four children, his "brother-in-law" John Burnett, "sister-in-law" Caroline Burnett and a servant, Jane Coombs.^[5]

By 1881 he was living on Sodbury Road in Mangotsfield, Gloucestershire, and decsribed as a licensed victualler. His wife Ann and their five children were also living in the household.^[6]

His wife Ann passed away in early 1882 and Francis married for a second time at Saints Philip and Jacob, Bristol to Elizabeth Bright on 21 November 1883.^[7] Francis was noted to be a widower.^[8]

Elizabeth passed away in early 1886 and in about 1888 Francis emigrated to Ontario, Canada with his children.

Francis married for a third time on 5 February 1889 to Annie Cartile in Toronto.^[9]

In the 1891 Canadian Census Francis was living with his family in Saint Patrick's Ward of Toronto. He was working as a retail butcher and provision dealer, with his religion recorded as Presbyterian.^[10]

Francis passed away in Toronto on 10 March 1918. He was buried two days later in Prospect Cemetery.^[11]
