Jane Hawkins was born in 1857 in Llangwm, Monmouthshire, Wales to Francis Hawkins and Caroline (Edwards) Hawkins. Jane was christened at Llangwm on 23 Aug 1857.[1]
In 1861 Jane Hawkins (age 3) lived at Pickadilly in Llangwm Isaf with her father Frank (44, Agricultural Labourer), mother Caroline (34), and three siblings: William (11, Scholar), Esther (9, Scholar), and Frank (1).[2]
In 1871 Jane Hawkins (age 13, Domestic Servant) lived in Llangwmhcha in the household of Cradock G Watkins.[3]
Jane Hawkins married Samuel Henry Hiscock on 7 Sep 1879 in Branksome Park, Dorset.[4] The marriage was registered in Poole, Dorset in the third quarter of the year.[5]
Jane and Samuel had four children: Samuel Henry Francis Hiscock (1880-1885), Elizabeth Hiscock (c1881-), Bertram Edward Hiscock (1884-1946), and William Francis Hiscock (1887-1947).
In 1881 Jane Hiscock (age 23, Dressmaker) lived at Cranleigh Cottes in Parkstone, Dorset with her husband Saml H (27, Pottery Labr), son Saml H (0), mother-in-law Elizabeth Hiscock (73), and two lodgers: Frank Marlow (23, Pottery Labr) and George Marlow (22, Pottery Carman).[6]
In 1891 Jane Hiscock (age 33) lived at Prospect Place in Bedwellty, Monmouthshire with her husband Samuel (37, Coal Miner) and three children: Elizabeth (11, Scholar), Bertram (7, Scholar), and William (3), as well as her brother Henry Hawkins (27, Steel Works Labourer) and three boarders: William Mence (26, Coal Miner), Hubert Haines (20, Steel Works Labourer), and Charles Cook (18, Steel Works Labourer).[7]
In 1901 Jane Hiscock (age 43) lived at High Street in Tredegar, Monmouthshore with her husband Samuel (47, Publican's Bar Manager) and two sons: Bertie (17, Boot Wade) and William (14, Baker), as well as two boarders: Evan Lewis (56, Timber Man) and Mark Pendry (40, Plate Layer Railway).[8]
There is not enough information available online to be exactly certain about what occured with Jane and her husband Samuel between the 1901 and 1911 census, but it seems they separated at some point: In 1911, Jane is listed as "widowed" and still lived in Tredegar. However, there is no record of Samuel's death, and in 1911 he is back in Dorset with his "wife" Ella and three children - all three children were registered with the surname Hiscock and mother's maiden name Meaby - and then Samuel H Hiscock married Ella M Meaby in 1914, after Jane passed away. So it would seem likely that Samuel and Jane separated but did not legally divorce, and Samuel was unable to marry his second wife until after Jane's death.
In 1911 Jane Hiscock (age 53, Confectioner Shopkeeper) lived in Tredegar with her daughter [granddaughter?] Elizabeth Ann Hiscock (11), four boarders: Mark Pendry (51, Platelayer Railway), Frank Pendry (23, Colliery Labourer Permanent Way), William Henry Pendry (23, Platelayer Railway Underground), and Charles Jones (27, Colliery Labourer Underground), as well as servant Annie Bridgeman (19).[9]
Jane Hiscock passed away in 1912, aged 54 years. Her death was registered in Bedwellty, Monmouthshire in the second quarter of the year.[10]
