Funeral services for Delmar c. "Del" Hawley,81,longtime J.C. Penny store manager in Parsons, were Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005,at 1:00 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church in Parsons with Rev. Peggy Hillmon officiating. Interment was in Garnett Cemetery that afternoon.
Mr. Hawley died Tuesday, Feb. 1, at his home. Delmar C. Hawley was born May 16, 1923, at Iola, the son of Charles L. & Eva M. (Rollo) Hawley. He was raised in Garnett by his grandparents,Porter & Bertha Hawley. He graduated from Garnett High School with the Class of 1941 & then served 3 years in the United States Army during World War II. He served overseas in Germany & France. He began his longtime career with the Penney Company working for the J.C.Penney store in Garnett when he was a junior in high school. After returning from the war, he returned to that store. In 1947, he became assistant manager of the store in Concordia, & in 1951 assumed that same position at the Hastings,NE, store. In 1954 Delmar was given his first job as a store manager at the store in Hamilton, MO. He became manager of the store in Holton in 1956 & in 1958 became the manager of the store in Parsons.During his years as manager of the Parsons store, it doubled in size & underwent numerous other improvements.He retired from the company on June 1, 1983.
Mr. Hawley was active in church & civic organizations throughout his life.He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church & had been a member of the Parsons Rotary Club since 1958.He had been active in the Chamber of Commerce & in the Labette County chapter of the American Red Cross,serving as a board member for many years & board president for several years. He was a charter & lifetime member of Garnett V.F.W. Post #6397. He was active in the Parsons Amateur Woodworking Society & was a member of HCSC (the retired employees of J.C.Penney). On December 6, 1942, Delmar married Vivian L. "Vicky" Ashburn at United Methodist Church in Garnett.
Mr. Hawley was preceded in death by his grandson; 3 brothers & a sister. Delmar is survived by his wife, Vivian "Vicky", of the home; his daughters, and sons-in-law, Sherry & Bud George of Crowley, TX, Connie & Jerry Korach of Troy, MI, and Cathy & Jim Perrier of Bartlesville, OK; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his brother, Oscar Clabaugh of McLouth; & his sister, Nadine Kirkpatrick of Wichita.
