Ellen daughter of Caroline (Barlow) Heeds (bef.1832-) and William Heeds, a Boatman was baptised at St Swithun's church, East Retford on 24th December 1855. The family was living at Canal Row [1].
Eliza Gertrude, illigitimate daughter of Ellen Heeds was baptised in St Giles' Church, Killamarsh, Derbyshire on 22 Mar 1877[2].
Francis William Heeds, illigitimate son of Ellen Heeds was baptised in St Giles' Church, Killamarsh, Derbyshire on 4th May 1881. The family were living in Killamarsh,[3].
Francis William died aged 2 and was buried at st Giles, Killamarsh on 29th November 1882 [4].
In 1891 Ellen (35) was living as a lodger in the household of William Jos Baker (36) at 3, 6 Ct White Croft (a street), Sheffield, Yorkshire. Also in the household were her presumed children Frances (8), John Wm (7) and Sarah Jane Heeds (8m) all born Sheffield [5].
Ellen (single, 37) married William Joseph Baker (38) , a Labourer, a widowerat St Luke's (Hollis Croft), Sheffield on 6th June 1892 [6].
By the 1901 census, the children Frances (18), John W (17), Sarah J (10) and Frank (5) had adopted the surname Baker. They were living with their mother (46) who is described as the wife of the head of household, William J Baker (47, general labourer) who is described as being a "cripple" (physically disabled). The family lived at 96 Nursery Lane, Brightside, Sheffield [7].
For an unknown reason, the couple remarried in the December quarter of 1901 in the Sheffield Registration District [8].
In the 1911 census, William Jos was not at home, but "Mrs Ellen Baker" was. She was born Retford, Nottinghamshire, and aged 59. Her occupation was "plain sewing". She had given birth to 11 children, of whom 4 were still alive, including John W (27, born Sheffield, a Mill Labourer at a steel rolling mill) and Frank (15, born Sheffield, a Drill Labourer at a steelworks). The family were living at 1 House 2 C Nursery Lane Sheffield [9].
In 1914 Ellen was living in Sheffield, and is named as the relative of Frank Baker, aged 19 [10].
William Joseph died aged 64 in the December quarter of 1917 in the Sheffield Registration District [11].
Ellen and the rest of the family do not appear in the 1861 census.
William Joseph may be the married carter living at Court 6, 3, Birley Street, Brightside Bierlow, Sheffield, Yorkshire & Yorkshire (West Riding), England in the 1881 census.
No obvious death found on FreeBMD. May be March Quarter 1933, Chesterfield Registration District (which includes both Kellamarsh and Shirebrook).
