Biography

Mary was born on 26th September 1852 in the parish of Clerihan, the daughter of Laurence and Ellen (Cleary) Henebry, although the family were from nearby Ballyveelish.[1] Sponsors were Patrick Henebry and Margaret Cleary

James Howley married Mary Heneberry on 14 April 1875 in Clonmel.[2]

In 1881 James, Mary and their children Joseph R (3) born Ireland, and Mary C (1) born East Grinstead, are living at 4 Albion Villas, East Grinstead.[3] Both parents and Joseph were born Ireland, James is an Inland revenue officer. Mary born East Grinstead.

In 1891 James (41) and Mary (41), and four children Mary (11), Francis J (9), Edward J (7) and Ellen (5) are living in Newcastle Upon Tyne.[4] Both parents are from Ireland, James is an Inland revenue officer. Mary and Francis were born in East Grinstead, and the younger two children Edward and Ellen in Scotland.

On 14 June 1896, three of their children were confirmed in the Catholic Church of St Norbert's Crowle, Franciscus Patricus, Edwardus Josephus, and Maria Catherina.[5] Note Francis uses the middle name Patrick, not Joseph. Daughter Ellen (Nelly) dosn't seem to have been confirmed then, anyway.

In 1901 Mary and children Francis, Edward and Nelly (Ellen?) are living in Crowle, Lincolnshire.[6] Husband James is not at home. Mary is working as a charwoman.

In 1911 widowed Mary her son Edward and a granddaughter Mary Howley aged 8, are living in Crowle Wharf, Lincolnshire.[7] Mary (senior) is from Clonmel. Edward was from Montrose, and the younger Mary born Cleethorpes.

In 1939 Mary and her granddaughter Mary are living the Isle of Axholme, Lincolnshire. Mary (senior) was born 26 September 1852, and Mary (junior) was born 8 September 1902.[8]

Mary Howley died in Crowle, Lincolnshire in March 1947 aged 95. She was buried on 23 December 1947.[9]

Research notes

  • YES - found baptism of a Patrick Joseph Howley in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, parents James Howley and Mary Hennebery Howley. "Ireland Civil Registration, 1845-1913," database, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QPKZ-3458 : 18 March 2023), Patrick Joseph Howley, 25 Oct 1877; Birth; Clonmel, Clonmel, County Tipperary, Ireland; citing General Register Office, Southern Ireland; FHL microfilm.
  • Using Scotlands People I have detemined that both Edward Joseph and Ellen were born in Montrose, Soctland.
  • See also https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/490706/help-with-locating-my-family-in-ireland
  • Granddaughter Mary was in fact the daughter of Mary her own daughter. Her baptism on 10 October 1902 in the Catholic Church in Crowle, Lincolnshire matches her birth date given in the 1939 register. Mary named as mother. There is a GRO entry for a Mary Howley born 1902 in Grimsby district, that includes Cleethorpes, but mother's maiden name given as Thompson, I wonder whether that was the father's name? [10]
