Notes
Note N44Born (a) Washington, Berkshire Co., Mass September 29, 1796. Accompanied his father to Boston, when the latter was member of the legisature (1812-13) and there attended Latin School and also witnessed the landing of and legislative reception to Commodore Bainbridge. He volunteered as a private in Capt. David Haynes company of infantry, 3rd regiment (Merrill's) Mass. militia, war of 1812, and served from Sept. 10 to Sept 28, 1814, being stationed at Bath for training; after which he served from Sept 28 to Oct 12, 1814 in Capt David R. Adams Company of foot, from the 1st regiment (Cutter's) Mass. militia. The tradition is, also that he was finally discharged from the service by virtue of a writ of Habeas Corpus, sued out by his father, because of his minority. He removed to Bainbridge, Geauga Co., Ohio, 1816, with his oldest brother, Orrin, and prepared for the coming of the family in 1817. While teaching school in or near Johnston, Trumbull Co., Ohio, he met Polly, the seventh child of Capt Simon and Ruth (Hanchet)Jaqua who was born in Salisbury, Conn. May 1, 1800, and came to Johnston in Sept. 1804. (b) They were married July 1, 1819, in Johnston, and lived there until March 1823, two children being born to them meanwhile. Thereafter they lived in Bainbridge and had seven children there. (c) A Methodist class-leader, teacher, surveyor, and farmer. He was many years also justice of peace and postmaster (Pond, P.O.) in Bainbridge, where he died Jan. 10, 1869. age 72years, 3mos, 11days. Plain-spoken, kind-hearted, devout, his fitting epitaph is "Careful in speech, forbearing toward man and faithful to God" His grave is in the old southeast burying ground. (for remarks on Polly see her notes.) (a) vital records of Washington Mass., page 15 (b) History of Trumbull and Mahoning Counties, p401 (c) This farm was still owned and occupied by Capt Charles E. Henry in 1905. As noted by Frederick A. Henry in his book, "Captain Henry of Geauga" John Henry had a very good memory, (John was the father of John Newton Henry and the son of Simon Henry.) John Henry could not only repeat from memory every word in Webster's "Spelling Book" when he presided at spelling schools, but he could recite the whole of Scotts "Lady of the Lake," much of Goldsmith's "Deserted Village," and all or large parts of divers other Poems. His wife Polly also had an excellent memory, could recite poems and could also make up stories based on some actual event. " Her account of the great meteoric shower in 1833," declared her son Edward, "Was Thrilling." It seemed as though the stars of heaven were all falling, and everyone but her husband, John Henry, thought the world was coming to an end. The effect on some of the neighbors was for good. Two or three wicked swearing fellows became almost converted to God, and behaved themselves for a long time. More meteors would have made them go to the mourners' bench. (More on Polly later in the Henry section)..
