Cesspool Fumes Fatal To Worker

Leonard Franklin Herme, a 33 year old St. Paul concert worker, overcome while cleaning out at Roseville cesspool Wednesday, died in route to Ancker hospital despite his brother Elmer efforts to save him. Leonard and his brother Elmer Herme, 35 both of 428 Carroll, were helping Douglas Frazer Sr. of 2135 Midlothian road clean out a sewage tank at 5 p.m. Elmer said Leonard had been in the pit about 15 min. using a gasoline driven pump. He asked Leonard several times to come up. Elmer said, but Leonard wouldn't. Finally Leonard began climbing the rope. He was overcome and fell into the water. Elmer was lowered by Frazer and his son with a second rope and managed to raise Leonard's head out of the water. Then Elmer too began losing consciousness. Elmer was pulled out by the Frazer's. He recovered. Deputy Sheriff Vic Webber cruising through the neighborhood, was hailed and je called the Roseville volunteer fire department. Fireman Willy Elynck carried Leonard up the ladder. Oxygen was administered to the victim more than a half hour until a police ambulance arrived to take him to Ancker. Leonard is survived by his wife and six children.
