Colin Henry Heron was born in Coxhoe, Durham, in 1888 and was the seventh son of Robert Heron and Maria Mohun.[1]
On the 1891 census, Colin, aged 2 years, is living at Long Row, Coxhoe, with his parents and siblings: Robert (22 years), Elizabeth (18 years), Eleanor (13 years), William (9 years), Walter (7 years) and Alfred (4 years).[2]
On the 1901 census, Colin, aged 12 years, is living at Black Gates, Coxhoe, with his parents and siblings: Eleanor (23 years), William (19 years), Walter (17 years), Alfred (14 years) and Ralph (9 years). His nephew, Lawrence, aged 6 months, is also living with them.[3]
On the 1911 census, Colin, aged 22 years, is living on Linden Terrace, Cornforth Lane, Coxhoe, with his widowed mother and siblings: William (29 years), Walter (27 years), Alfred (24 years) and Ralph (19 years). Colin is a railway fireman.[4]
Colin enlisted with the Yorkshire Regiment on 15 December 1914 but he was discharged a few months later as he had one leg 2 inches shorter than the other which would prevent him from marching for any distance. The shortened length was due to a fracture of the thigh that happened five years previously.[5]
Colin married Sarah Ann Singleton in Sedgefield in 1915 and they had three sons.[6]

On the 1921 census, Colin, a locomotive engine driver, and Sarah are living at Blackgate, Coxhoe, with their son, Gordon, aged 11 months. Their eldest son, Kenneth, died, aged 3 years.[7]
Colin Henry Heron died, aged 49 years, on 23 July 1938. An obituary revealed Colin had been licensee of the Bridge Hotel in Coxhoe for the past ten years.[8][9]
