Biography

He was the son of Robert Hicks and Rebecca Harrison. He was born at least by 1769, probably earlier. That would be the latest date he could have been born by in order to purchase land in 1787, as noted below.

Land Transaction

This Indenture made this twenty sixth Day of November 1787 between Harrison Hicks of the one part and John Wills of the County of Brunswick of the other part . . . for and in consideration of the sum [of] eighty five pounds . . . do grant Bargain sell alien and confirm unto the said John Wills . . . one tract or parcel of Land Situate lying and being in the County of Brunswick, containing by Estimation one hundred and sixty seven Acres . . . and bounded as followeth (VIZ) BEGINNING at Bishop's Creek on Walker's line, thence along the Walker's line to Beverly Brown's line, thence along the said Brown's line to Robert Hick's line, thence along the said Hick's line to John King's line on Bishop's Creek, then down the said Creek to the BEGINNING it being the Land whereon the said Hicks now lives . . . Signed by Harrison Hicks and witnessed by Edward Birchett, Junior, Theophilus Harrison and Lewis Hicks. Brunswick County Court the 28th Day of January 1788. This Indenture was acknowledged by Harrison Hicks a partie thereto and ordered to be recorded. Deed Book 14, page 333.

Power of Attorney

Harrison Hicks died prior to Feb. 8, 1790 after having moved to South Carolina. His father created a power of attorney regarding his estate.

Dated Feb. 8, 1790. To all to whom these presents shall come greeting Know ye that I Robert Hicks of Brunswick County in the State of Virginia have named appointed & constituted & do by these presents name appoint and constitute Abner Hill of Greensville in the said State of Virginia by Attorney with full power and authority for me and in my name to demand & receive all and every sum or sums of money or other property which was belonging to or owing to my son Harrison Hicks deceased & late of County in the State of South Carolina and in my name as my attorney give sufficient receipts for all sums of money or other property to any person or persons of whom he shall receive any money or other property that is or my be owing to or belonging to the estate of my said deceased son Harrison Hicks & I do hereby give and grant to my said attorney full & compleat [sic] power & authority to use and exercise all such acts and devises in the law as shall be necessary in the premises as fully as myself could act & do if I was personally present hereby ratifying confirming & allowing all and whatsoever my said attorney shall lawfully do or cause to be done therein by virtue of these presents. In writing whereof I have hereunto set my hand & affixed my seal this 8th Day of February, 1790. Signed by Robert Hicks, and witnessed by Lewis Hicks, Geo. Hicks, and Binns Jones. Brunswick County Court November 22nd 1790. This Letter of Attorney was proved according to Law by the oaths of George Hicks & Binns Jones two of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded.
