Daniel Higbee was born February 11, 1745 in Rochester, Massachusetts[1]. He came with his father to Sheffield, Massachusetts, about 1757. He served in the American War for Independance, and was in the battle of Hubbardton [2]. He held land at Sheffield, and his estate was probated on 16 September, 1784.[3]
Daniel Higbee is only mentioned in a birth record in the Higby Genealogy with no further information.[4]
He married Mary (possibly the daughter of Abraham Burrell, and who later married William Spaulding), and had, probably all by her, four children:
Dexter b est abt 1778
Hannah b est abt 1780
Silas b est abt 1782
David b est abt 1784
The ages of the children are estimated based on their order in a land record[5], and Daniel's last year alive. They all may be older. Silas may be the #165 Silas Higby in the Higby Genealogy[4]. The genealogy claims (without source?) that Silas is the son of Daniel Elton Higbie. However Daniel Elton Higbie does not mention Silas in his will, only his three sons whose birth records exist.
His marriage record and the bith records of his children are not found. However record of his family has been found in land records relating to his estate.
A land record dated March 1, 1791 (and recorded May 2, 1809) mentions some of his siblings, as well as his widow Mary, and children Dexter, Hannah, Silas, and David.[5]
Another record dated May 27, 1807 mentions all of his siblings, as well as "Dexter Higby, Aaron Gray, Hannah his wife [all of Vermont], Silas Higby + David Higby [both of New York]": his four children and son-in-law.[6][7][8]
