James served in the military from 1914 to 1920. On 10 May 1917 he was recorded in the Royal Garrison Artillery No.155287 Gunner J.H.Higham 425 Battery.[6]
He died at the age of 76 on 7 February 1958 at 12 Bridgeman Terrace Wigan.[7][8]
