Biography

Henry Hiles was born in Shrewsbury, the youngest of six sons. His eldest brother, John Hiles, was known as an arranger of organ music and for authoring several catechisms. He began studying the piano at the age of 4 and began studying the organ just a few years later.[1] He studied at the University of Oxford where he earned Bachelor of Music and Doctor of Music degrees. In 1892, he founded the Society of Professional Musicians. He was a frequent contributor of articles to The Quarterly Musical Review for which he was also editor and propieter from 1885-1888.[2] He taught for many years on the music faculty of the Royal Manchester College of Music where among his notable pupils was composer Leo Smith.[3] He held a number of church posts during his career, including serving as organist at St Michael Wood Street. He married: first to Fanny Lockyer, and second to Isabel Higham. They had sons and one daughter.[4] On 20 October 1904, he died at Worthing.[5]

Research Notes

At the 1851 census Henry was living in Hulme, Lancashire with his parents and three siblings. His father was James, aged 70 born in Ludlow, Shropshire; his mother was Sarah, aged 61 born in Shrewsbury. His siblings were George (36), Sarah (34), and Mary (19), all born in Shrewsbury. Henry's occupation was Professor of Music.[6]

At the 1841 census he was living in Shrewsbury with his brother John whose occupation was Organist. Also in the household was Sarah Hiles aged 20, but the relationships were not recorded at that time.[7]

He married Fanny Lockyer in Surbiton, Surrey on 27 December 1860. Her father was William Lockyer, a gentleman.[8] From the 1871 census, Fanny was born in Somerset about 1814.[9] But at the 1861 census, her age was 39 and birth place was in Lancashire.[10] Fanny died in the Chorlton district (Lancashire) in the last quarter of 1872, her age was given as 54 on the death registration which is halfway between the two census records.[11] She was possibly the daughter of William and Mary who was baptised at Bridgwater, Somerset in 1818.[12]

He married Isabella Higham at Salford, Lancashire in the last quarter of 1873.[13] From the 1881 census Isabella was born in Manchester about 1851.[14] At the 1871 census she was living in Cheetham, Lancashire with her parents and two older sisters. Her parents, Joseph and Isabella, were both 55 born in London; Joseph was a Musical Instrument Maker.[15] However, at the 1851 census Joseph gave his birthplace as Chedgrave, Cheshire, and Isabella gave hers as Sturston, Yorkshire.[16] In 1861 they gave their birth places as Cheadle, Cheshire and Shipton, Yorkshire, respectively.[17] Joseph Higham married Isabella Houldsworth at Manchester in 1837.[18]
