He was ordained in Adelaide in the Methodist Church in 1883 and worked as a minister in Kent Town, Port Perie, Hawker and Port Adelaide before being transferred to NSW in 1902 where he worked in Armidale, West Maitland, Manly and Ashfield among other places.
John married Elisabeth Elsie Goldsmith in Adelaide in 1887.
He passed away at the age of 82 at Lindfield in Sydney in 1941 was survived by his wife and two daughters.
