John Hillman (Jan Helman - Dutch/English spelling) Jan was listed as being from Old England. Married Catrina Keyser (Old Dutch Family) on February 9, 1734. They were married by Domine Manicus. Records are found in the Old Dutch Church, Kingston, NY. Jan and Catrina both lived in Marbletown, NY (Near Kingston). They lived there about 15 years after being married. Son John was born in Marbletown in 1739. Shortly after, they traveled to Dansbury(now Stroudsburg), PA near the Delaware Water Gap. John was the last child born in Marbletown. They had 13 children in all. The last was Samuel. He was born November 18, 1755 in Dansbury. Shortly before the family farm was burned out by the Indians on December 10, 1755, they traveled to the Moravian Mission in Nazareth, PA where Catrina and her son died as a result of what they had been through. They and Catrina's sister and infant son are buried at the Mission. That is why John Hillman son of Jan Helman (Dutch spelling) named his first born Samuel (after the infant brother who died during the French and Indian War). His wife Elizabeth was first married to Van Campen. He was killed by the Seneca. His son was captured and escaped with a cousin named Moses Van Campen (famous Indian fighter). Elizabeth later married John Hillman. Her family (Depuy/Depue/Dupui)were among the first to settle near the Delaware Water Gap. They had considerable wealth and land. She and John moved to Chemung County NY between 1787 and 1789. John had been a member of the Sullivan Clinton Expedition. It is on his name that family members have joned the Sons of the American Revolution. The sender, Harry Augustus Hillman.
