Biography

Ellen Hillyar was born in Lyndhurst, Hampshire, England.

Ellen was baptised on the 25th of January 1847, in St. Michael and All Angel's Church, Lyndhurst, Hampshire, England. Ellen is the daughter of David Hillyar and Elizabeth Ann Read. ^[1] Ellen's birth was registered in the Oct-Dec, quarter of 1846, in the New Forest, Hampshire, district. ^[2]

In 1851, Ellen aged 4, is living in Lyndhurst, Hampshire, with her parents David and Elizabeth, and her sisters, Emma, Elizabeth, Jane, and Kate. Ellen's father David is a "master Shoemaker", also in the household is David's apprentice, William Lewis. ^[3]

In 1861, Ellen, aged 14, is a "scholar" and living with her parents, David and Elizabeth, in Lyndhurst. David is a "boot and shoe maker" and he is now employing 2 men and a boy. Ellen's sisters Emma, and Kate are still in the household and Ellen now has a brother George and a new sister Alice Ann. ^[4]

In 1871, Ellen aged 24, is living with her parents, David and Elizabeth, in Lyndhurst, Hampshire. David is now a "grocer" as well as a "shoe maker", but he no longer has any employees working for him. ^[5]

In 1881, following the death of her father David, in 1879, Ellen 34, is employed as a "assistant schoolmisstress" and is living in the High Street, Lyndhurst, with her mother Elizabeth and sister Alice. Elizabeth is a "fancy Shop Keeper" and Alice is a "shop assistant". ^[6]

Ellen's mother Elizabeth Ann, died in 1883. On the censuses of 1891, 1901 and 1911, Ellen and her older sister Elizabeth, lived together in the High Street, Lyndhurst, carrying on running the china and fancy goods shop which had been run by their mother. In 1891 living with them was Rose Stote, age 16, who was a "general domestic servant". 1891 census. ^[7] 1901 census. ^[8] 1911 census. ^[9]

Ellen and her sister Elizabeth are mentioned in the Kelly's Trade directories, for Lyndhurst, Hampshire, for, 1895, 1920 and 1927. They are described as 'Misses' and their business is 'fancy repository'. The 1927 directory is the only one which gives their address, which was The High Street. 1895, ^[10] 1920, ^[11] 1927, ^[12]

Ellen died on the 27th of November 1929. Ellen's death was registered in the Oct-Dec qtr of 1929, in the New Forest District, Hampshire, ^[13] and probate was granted at Winchester, on the 19th of February 1930, to her sister, Elizabeth Hillyar. ^[14]

On Ellen's baptism record, and her birth registration, Ellen and her father's surname is recorded as Hillyer. Smith-245120 07:41, 14 May 2022 (UTC)

On the 1891 census, Elizabeth is not recorded as the head of the household but 'sister'. It appears that the transcriber has failed to see the markings, \\ on the census, which show the start of the next household. Elizabeth and Ellen are the only occupiers of their dwelling.
