Lived at Mount Fyffe, Kaikoura, New Zealand. Occupation: Farmer.
Religion Lutheran.
His age on marriage certificate given as 36 years (b. 1826) but he was probably much older in his 40s.
He has to mark his will with an X in place of a signature so have to presume he was illiterate.
Died in Christchurch hospital on 24 September 1881. Age given in death certificate as 62 years (b. 1819). This would have made him 43 when he married his 17 year old wife. (The age difference was not uncommon in German Lutheran community).
Kaikoura Museum hold a record of Kaikoura County Council correspondence making arrangements for John Hintz to be sent to Christchurch Hospital for medical treatment in March 1880. Buried Addington Cemetery, Christchurch in 1881.
It would seem that Elizabeth left John Hintz to take up with John Harwood as her son William died in Little River, Banks Peninsula August 1881 one month before John Hintz died in Kaikoura.
Daughter Mary Ann’s death registration recorded with surname “Hines” but birth certificate states John Harwood as father. William’s death registration states his surname as Harwood.
In his 1883 probate record he names son "Johann Heinrich Hans Hintz" as sole benefactor.
How did he come to meet his wife? Was he living in the Nelson area when he met Maria Elisabeth Bockmann or did he come up to Nelson to marry a young German wife by arrangement and take her back to Kaikoura? He appears to have a German name - where did he come from originally? Was he from Mecklenburg or Lubeck (Schleswig-Holstein)?
Bockmann-Hintz Timeline

Research notes
Physically visited Addington Cemetery in 2022 to locate grave. There is no headstone for John Hintz. Instead, there were headstones for the Earwaker family in the same location. Checked with Christchurch City Council Cemetery Support service and they confirmed that according to the heritage advisor: "they would have resold the plots, so it would be likely that a stranger would be interred on top of another. He said they would have triple burials. So John Hintz and the Earwaker family would likely be in the same grave(s)." According to the cemetery database it is John Hintz (buried 1881) and Charles Henry Earwaker (buried 1895) who share the same plot number 973C.
There is a German birth record for a father bearing practically the same name: Johann Joachim Heinrich Hinz. The wife's name is Maria Catharina Friederica Tarnau and the child's name is Elisabeth Maria Margaretha Hinz. The child's birth data and place is 18 Nov 1858, Lübeck, Deutschland [Germany].
