Born: on 28 April 1844,in Quethiock, Cornwall, England, father John HOCKING, mother Jane Jenefer HARVEY, resided in St Just, Cornwall, England.

Arrival in SA: various possibilities are suggested including arriving as a 4 year old child, with parents John and his wife, on the ship "Westminster", arriving on 08 July 1848 or on the "Bussorah Merchant" arriving on 09 November 1848. The passenger lists provide few details about those on board. A John Hocking is listed on the "Bussorah Merchant"as an agricultural labourer. A Joseph Hocking with wife and 5 children is also listed and may be John's father (although his father is also referred to as John) They may have also arrived on a later voyage.
