Biography

Mary Ann Hodge was baptized in Tywardreath,[1] Cornwall, on 9 October 1864. The names of her parents were Hart and Susan.[2]

Mary Ann's birth was registered in the St Austell district[3] in the second quarter of 1864,[4] and the General Register Office birth index[5] reveals that her mother's maiden surname was Bawden.

Mary Ann's parents were the Hart Hodge and Susannah Bawden whose marriage was registered in the St Austell district in the first quarter of 1862.[6]

The birth of a Thomas Henry Bawden Hodge was registered in the St Austell district in the second quarter of 1862.[7] Since the General Register Office birth index[5] says that his mother's maiden surname was Bawden, it seems highly probable that he was Mary Ann's brother. However, no baptism record has been been found for Thomas Henry Bawden Hodge.

Mary Ann's father Hart Hodge travelled unaccompanied to America in 1869; he was a passenger in the SS Minnesota,  which arrived in New York on 28 July of that year. The passenger list gives his age as 25, whereas he would actually have been 27, but as there is no record of any Hart Hodge who would actually have been 25 in 1869, it is quite certain that the passenger was Mary Ann's father.[8]

An 1871 census record shows Mary Ann Hodge, aged 6, living on North Street in Tywardreath with her 29 year old mother Susan Hodge and 8 year old brother Thomas H. Hodge. The record says that Susan was a miner's wife, the children were scholars, and all three were born in Tywardreath.[9][10]

Appearing immediately before Susan Hodge's household in the census book we find an elderly couple named Henery and Jennefer Hodge.[11][10] These people were in fact Mary Ann's paternal grandparents; see Hart Hodge's profile for more information.

Ten years later the Hodge family were still living on North Street. Susan Hodge was now a widow, and her widowed mother-in-law Jenefer Hodge was also in her household.

North Street, Tywardreath, 3 April 1881:[12][13]
Susan Hodge (Head, 39, Coal Miners Widow, Tywardreath)
Thomas H. Hodge (Son, 18, Cabinet Maker, Tywardreath)
Mary A. Hodge (Daughter, 16, Dressmaker, Tywardreath)
Jenefer Hodge (Mother in law, 78, Ag Lab Widow, St Austell)

At the time of Mary Ann's baptism her father had been a miner,[2] but not a coal miner (since there was no coal mining in Cornwall), It seems probable that he had been forced to leave Cornwall to find employment.

It transpires that Hart Hodge died in a coal mining accident in Negaunee, Michigan, on 14 January 1881.[14][15]

Michigan probate records between 1793 and 1973 are available online in FamilySearch films. The sixteen pages dealing with Hart Hodge's estate include Mrs Susan Hodge's receipt for the items sent her by the administrator of her husband's estate, namely a trunk containing her husband's possessions and bank drafts for £82 and £70.[16]

We cannot know if there had been any plan for Hart Hodge's family to join him in America, but seventeen months after his death, on 21 June 1882, a Susan Hodge and a Mary Hodge arrived in New York as passengers in the SS Scythia.  The passenger list says that Susan was a 41 year old matron and Mary was an 18 year old spinster, and that they were both from England and intended to become inhabitants of the United States.[17]

Transcribed records on FamilySearch say that on 2 April 1885 in Oglesby, LaSalle County, Illinois, a Minnie Hodge, 21 year old daughter of Hart Hodge and Susan Bawden, married a James Mankey, 24 year old son of Thomas Mankey and Mary Roach.[18][19]

The sources for these two records are images 382 and 383 from microfilm no. 1710811, in item 2 on that film, described as "Marriage registers, vol. 2, #1026-4747" (1884 to 1889).[20] The marriage of Minnie and James was no. 1679.

Unfortunately images from film 1710811 have viewing restrictions. They can be viewed online in Family History Centres.

Hart Hodge and Susan Bawden had only one son and one daughter; so Minnie Hodge must have been the same person as Mary Ann Hodge..

In fact FamilySearch have three other transcribed records giving slightly different versions of the same story. They come from images 325, 326 and 327 of microfilm no. 001683924, "Marriage licenses, bk. 2, 1575-2499" (1885 to 1886).[21] One of these gives the names of Minnie's parents as Hort Hodge and Susanna Bowden, two of them give Minnie's age as 20 rather than 21, and one gives the date of the marriage as 28 March 1885.[22][23][24]

Probably the marriage licence was obtained on 28 March and the marriage service took place on 2 April.

Since Mary Ann's birth was registered in the second quarter of 1864, it is more likely that her birthday was after 2 April rather than before. It is also possible that she was 20 when the marriage licence was obtained but turned 21 before the marriage service.

At the time of the 1920 census James and Minnie Mankey were living in Garden City, Eden Township, in Clark County South Dakota. The census record says that James was a 57 year old retired farmer who was born in England and immigrated in 1875. Minnie was a 54 year old housewife who was born in England and immigrated in 1882. And also in the household was James's 78 year old widowed mother-in-law Susan Headley, who was born in England and had immigrated in 1882.[25]

Evidently some time after her arrival in the United States in 1882, the widowed Susan Hodge had married a Mr Headley, who died before 1920.

At the time of the 1900 census James and Minnie Mankey were living in Maydell Township, Clark County, South Dakota, with their three sons T. Austin Mankey, B. Leroy Mankey and J. Clyde Mankey. The census record says that Minnie was born in England in April 1864, had immigrated in 1882, had been married for 15 years, and was the mother of three children who were all still living. James Mankey was a farmer who was born in England in May 1860, and of course had also been married for 15 years, He was the owner of his farm, free of mortgage. T. Austin Mankey was born in Illinois in July 1886, B. Leroy Mankey was born in Illinois in February 1888, and J. Clyde Mankey was born in South Dakota in February 1891. The boys were all attending school.[26]

World War I draft registration cards say that Austin Thomas Mankey was born in LaSalle Illinois on 15 July 1886, Burton Le Roy Mankey was born in LaSalle Illinois on 29 February 1888, and Clyde James Mankey was born in Garden City South Dakota on 2 July 1891.[27][28][29]

At the time of the 1905 South Dakota census Burton L. Mankey and James C. Mankey, who were both students, were living with James and Minnie in Maydell Township,[30][31][32][33] but Austin Mankey, who was a druggist, had moved to Eden Township.[34]

In 1910 James and Minnie Mankey were stiil living in Maydell Township. James was still a farmer and the owner of his farm, though it was mortgaged. The two oldest sons had left home, but Clyde Mankey was still with his parents.[35] Austin T. Mankey, druggist, was in Wallace Village, Codington County,[36] but where Burton Mankey was in 1910 has not yet been discovered.

The 1915 South Dakota census shows that James and Minnie Mankey had moved from Maydell Township to Eden Township. James was a farmer and owned his farm, but this census record does not say whether or not there was a mortgage. Precise addresses were not recorded, but James and Minnie lived in Ward 1. Clyde J. Mankey, who was a 24 year old unmarried labourer, also lived in Eden Township in Ward 1; however, since James's details were recorded on Card no. 212, Minnie's on Card no. 213 and Clyde's on Card no. 203, it looks as though Clyde was not living in the same house as his parents.[37][38][39]

In 1915 Austin T. Mankey, pharmasist, and Burton L. Mankey, druggist, were both living in Ward 3 in Webster City,[40] Day County, but presumably not at the same address. Both were married.[41][42]

Minnie A. Mankey, is buried in Garden City Cemetery, Clark County, South Dakota, and there is a "Find a Grave" memorial for her incorporating a photo of her gravestone. It says that she was the wife of James, was born in 1864, and died in 1921.[43]
