Biography

Daniel Hoff was born on October 29, 1885[1] in South Dakota. He was the son of Ludwig Hoff and Maria Katharina Hieb.

At 15, he was in the home of his sister and Brother-in-law, Margret and William Mohr, where he was working as a farm laborer, in Blaine, McPherson County, south Dakota.[2] In 1905, at 18, he was working as a farm Laborer in South Dakota.[3]

He married Rosa Hieb on June 14, 1906 in Washburn, Mclean, North Dakota.[4]

He died on February 26, 1966, at the age of 81, in Fort MacLoud, Alberta, Canada, and was buried in the Claresholm Cemetery in Claresholm, Alberta, Canada.[1]

Research Note

Daniel's unsourced birth date of Oct 1884 is wrong. His mother married a second time to Georg Gramm in 1868. So Daniel needed to be born before this wedding date.

Head Stone: 1885-1966.

Daniel may have been born in Cassel, Odessa, Russia.

His parent's imigrated in 1882.

Note update 7 September, 2021: the note claims that Catharina Hieb was married a second time in 1868. I see no sources for this second marriage. Her profile doesn’t even mention a second marriage.

Furthermore, from the sources I have found for this family, Catharina’s first marriage to Ludwig Hoff was in 1866. Based on the birthdates listed, Catharina would have been 21, and Ludwig would have been 19 at the time of their marriage in 1866. It is unlikely that the marriage date is far off, based on their ages; it is even more unlikely that the couple could have had 6 children in 2 years; which would have needed to happen, for Catharina to be able to have all of these kids with him and still remarry in 1868.

Additionally, based on the 1880 Census I found, that matches closely with the rest of this family, Ludwig was still alive in 1880. Daniel was not present, which makes it entirely possible, in my mind, that he could have been born closer to the original date listed in this profile, 1884. If he was born in 1884, he was most likely born in America. Therefore, I am removing the ‘before 1862’ estimated birthdate, because 1) his father would have been 15 or younger at the time of Daniel’s birth, which seems unlikely; and because 2) I see nothing from sources or from listed relationships that indicates Daniel needed to be born before 1868. As the original date listed for this profile was 1884, and I cannot save this profile without a date, I am setting this profile to ‘before 1885,’ which allows for an 1862 birthdate or an 1884 birthdate. -P. Clinesmith, 7 September, 2021

Sometimes a child was not present in the home because they were working as laborer's out side the home/another farm.
