Born Sarah was born in 1869 and her name was registered as Sarah Woolley Hogg [1].
She was baptised with the same name on 1 February 1874 in Ripley [2] - see Research Notes.
In 1871[3] Sarah (1) was living with her mother Charlotte (36) at Derby Road Heanor in the household of her widowed father, Joseph Heath (74) "Innkeeper". Also living there are presumably Charlotte's other children Mary (9) and Charlotte Ann (7). On 20 April 1871 Charlotte married George Woolley b1826 [4].
In 1881[5] Sarah Woolley (11) was living with George Woolley (55) "farmer" and Charlotte (43) as well as Charlotte A. Woolley (17), Florence Woolley (7), Martha A Woolley (6), George J. Woolley (4) and Frances E. Woolley (2) at Nottingham Road Pentrich Derbyshire.
At the time of the 1891 census [6] the household was George Woolley (65) "farmer and innkeeper", his wife Charlotte Woolley (53), Charlotte A Woolley (26) listed as "wife's daughter", Sarah Woolley (21), Florence J Woolley (17) "school teacher", Martha A Woolley (16), George J Woolley (14), Frances E Woolley (12) and Edward H Moore (2). grandson.
Marriage On 17 November 1891 Sarah Woolley married Alfred Hawley, son of the innkeeper Levi Hawley, in All Saints Ripley [7][8].
Alfred and Sarah had four children:
In April 1900 Alfred died age 30 [13].
In 1901[14] Sarah Hawley, (31) widow "brewer's agent" was living in Cromford Road Ripley, Derbyshire together with her children Alfred (7), Reuben (5) and Charlotte (3). Also in the household are Samuel Bower (19) "Brewer's Store Labourer" and Elizabeth A Lowe (17) "General Servant/Domestic". Daughter Florence was staying with her grandparents.
Marriage In April 1902 Sarah married Samuel Bower[15].
Samuel and Sarah had six children:
In 1911[16]
there were 13 persons living at the Cromford Road address, a dwelling with 10 rooms:
Samuel Bower (32) now "Brewer's Agent"
Sarah Bower (39) listed as married 9 years (correct) with 11 children (!) of whom 9 are still living (this refers to her children from both marriages! All nine are present)
Florence M Hawley, step daughter (18) "at home"
Alfred G Hawley, step son (17) "Auctioneer's pupil"
Reuben J Hawley, step son (16) "Apprenticed to Gent's Outfitters"
Lottie Hawley, step daughter (13) "at home"
Dorothy Bower, daughter (9) "school"
Ida Bower, daughter (7) "school"
Edith Bower, daughter (5)
Jack Bower, son (3)
Minnie Bower, son (2)
William H Godber, Boarder (26) single "Thrashing Machine Proprietor" [17]
Name and parentage Sarah was born and baptised as Sarah Woolley Hogg. At her baptism only her mother's name, Charlotte Hogg, was listed.
Charlotte Heath, born in 1837, the daughter of Joseph and Sarah Heath of Heanor, Derbyshire, had married William Hogg in 1861 [19]. William died on 6 February1868 [20], i. e. a year and a half before Sarah was born.
At the time of 1871 Census the family of Dr Thomas Woolley (33) medical practitioner was living next door in Derby Road Heanor. As Charlotte married George Woolley in 1871 it is reasonable to assume that George was Sarah's father. Certainly from thereon after she used only the surname "Woolley". More research is required on the Woolley family
