Biography

Prince Karl Albrecht II. (Hohenlohe-Waldenburg-Schillingsfürst)

Karl Albrecht II Philipp Ludwig Franz de Paula Prince of Hohenlohe-Waldenburg-Schillingsfürst (born February 21, 1742 in Schillingsfürst; † June 14, 1796 in Schillingsfürst) was a member of the House of Hohenlohe and k. k. Major General. From 1793 he was the 3rd Prince of Hohenlohe-Waldenburg-Schillingsfürst. Full title: Prince of Hohenlohe-Waldenburg, Lord of Oehringen, of Langenburg and Schillingsfürst.

Life

Karl Albrecht II was a son of Prince Karl Albrecht I (1719-1793) and his wife Sophia Wilhelmine Marie zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort (1721-1749), daughter of Prince Dominik Marquard zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort (1690- 1738). As a colonel under Empress Maria Theresa in Hungary, he had met the lady-in-waiting Judith, née Frein Reviczky de Revisnye, and married her without his father's permission. Karl Albrecht II was at odds with his father, Prince Karl Albrecht I, because of this "unsuitable marriage" to the widowed Hungarian. Judith had a son, Emerich, from her first marriage to the Hungarian cavalier Böthy (Emerich Freiherr von Pöthy). In 1776, three years after the wedding, the young family arrived in Kupferzell and were not allowed to live in Waldenburg. The secondary castle in Kupferzell was assigned to them as their place of residence.

Family

Karl Albrecht II married Princess Leopoldine zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort (1739-1765), the daughter of Prince Karl Thomas zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort (1714-1789), in his first marriage on May 19, 1761. The couple had two children, who did not survive infancy:

Francis (1762–1762) Child (born June 2, 1765) The princess died as a result of the birth of the second child. In his second marriage, Karl Albrecht II married the Hungarian Baroness Judith Reviczky de Revisnye (1753–1836), Lady of the Star Cross, on August 15, 1773 without his father's permission. Her parents were the imperial-royal field marshal lieutenant Johann Baron Reviczky de Revisnye (became Reichsfreiherr in 1773) and Rosalia, nee Baroness von Pereny (Perenyi de Nagy-Szölöss). The Reviczky are an old Hungarian noble family that traces its lineage back to the progenitor Hotimir at the beginning of the 13th century. Thirteen children were born of this marriage:

Maria Josepha (1774–1824) Charles Albrecht III. (1776–1843), Prince of Hohenlohe-Waldenburg-Schillingsfürst Joseph (1777–1800), Austrian cavalry captain who died as a result of a serious wound after a battle with the French at Erbach near Ulm Maria Theresa (1779–1819) Francisca (1780–1783) Albert (1781–1805), Austrian cavalry captain who died as a result of a serious wound after a battle with the French at Haslach near Ulm Antoinette (1783–1803) Friederike (*/† 1785) Eleanor (1786–1849), unmarried Franz Joseph (1787–1841), Prince of Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst, father of Victor I Duke of Ratibor and Clovis of Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst Caroline (1789–1799) Gabrielle (1791–1863) Alexander (1794–1849), Catholic minister and faith healer
