He and Harriet Pickney Rutledge married in Charleston, South Carolina in 1827.
A physician and naturalist, Dr. Holbrook is known for his comprehensive study of North American reptiles.
John Edwards Holbrook died in Massachusetts in 1871. He is buried in the Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston, South Carolina.
