Richard Holcroft was born in Lancashire, England.

Richard was born in 11 Feb 1874 in Wigan, Lancashire. He was christened at Wigan on 9 Mar 1874. His date of birth was given on the christening record. His parents were Thomas (a collier) and his wife Elizabeth Holcroft of Woodhouse Lane. ^[1] His birth was registered in the first quarter of 1874. The mother's maiden name was Walls.

In 1881, the family was living in Chilton. ^[2]
