Biography

Lenton was born on April 1, 1884 in Smith County, Texas.[1][2][3] He grew up in Texas and worked as a farm laborer in his teens.[4]

Lenton married Maggie Gower on March 26, 1910 in Wichita County, Texas[5][6][7] Together, they had several children, including:

  • Milan born abt. 1912;[8]
  • Walter Alton, born March 14, 1913, died May 7, 1970;[8][9]
  • Morris, born abt. 1915;[8]
  • Bessie, born April 6, 1917, died November 23, 2008;[8][10]
  • Joseph "Joe", born May 11, 1920, died May 6, 2014;[11][12][13]
  • Mary Ruth, born abt. 1924;[11][12]
  • Jewel Dean, born abt. 1927; and[11][12]
  • Foye L., born October 17, 1928, died June 8, 2018;[11][12][14]

On February 18, 1948, Lenton died of coronary thrombosis.[3][15] He is buried at Riverside Cemetery in Wichita Falls, Texas.[16]

Research Notes

Lenton's death certificate[3] lists his birthplace as Mississippi, not Smith County, Texas as mentioned above. However, given all of the federal censuses from 1900-1940 list Texas as his birthplace and his WWII draft registration card[2] reference his birthplace as Smith County, Texas, this is the likely place he was born. Lenton's mother was born in Mississippi,[7][8] which may explain the discrepancy on the death certificate.
