Biography

Birth & Early Life

Lucy Sargent Holland, the daughter of James William Holland and Mary Boggs Rupert, was born in Louisville, Kentucky, on July 20, 1880.[1][2]

Lucy's father was a physician. By 1900, she and her family were living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She continued to live with her parents, and then with her mother after her father died in 1922, until her marriage in 1930.[3][4][5]

Marriage

On September 30, 1930, Lucy married in Maine, George Palmer Putnam, Jr., of Chicago, Illinois. Lucy was 50 and George was 54.[1][6] They had no children.

Later Life

George and Lucy Putnam, age 58 and 53, of 213 [Beech] Tree Lane, Wayne, Pennsylvania, appear on the June 6, 1934, passenger list of the ship Il De France which sailed from Plymouth, England, and arrived at New York City on June 12.[2]

They are then found on the June 2, 1937, passenger list of the ship Conte De Savoia, which sailed from Villafranche, France, and arrived at New York City on June 10.[7]

The 1940 and 1950 United States Census has them still living at 213 Beechtree Lane, Radnor Township, Delaware, Pennsylvania. Presumably they were retired as no occupations are listed.[8][9]

George died June 28, 1957, aged 81. His ashes were interred at the Black Point Cemetery in Scarborough, Maine.[10]

Lucy owned property in Scarborough, Maine, per a Town of Scarborough, Maine Revaluation Report dated April 1, 1958, which lists, "Putnam, Lucy S. H.; Parcel no.: U32-17; Total Value Land: 16030; Total Value Buildings: 17250."[11]

The compiler remembers family talking of "Lucy Putnam's House" on Winslow Homer Road in Prouts Neck, Scarborough, Maine. A newspaper article dated April 21, 1977, documents the day that Lucy Putnam's Prouts Neck summer residence was destroyed by fire:[12]

Scarborough - One oceanfront home was destroyed and a second heavily damaged in a general alarm fire on Winslow Homer Road at Prouts Neck Thursday afternoon. Fanned by a strong onshore wind, the Scarborough fire leveled the $150,000 summer residence of Mrs. George Putnam of Pennsylvania, fire officials said. (April 21, 1977).[12]

Death & Burial

Lucy Putnam died in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, in July of 1981, aged 100 or 101. She is buried with her husband at the Black Point Cemetery in Scarborough, Maine.[1]
